i miss the JAG...

Tuesday, July 22, 2003

check out the stuttering page on my site - 3 video clips, ~900k each, from last Saturday's Braai Klub at the JAG.

Friday, June 27, 2003

I've been told by one, Mr. Nerf, that there are not enough "others" posting to this blog. So here I go.

It's amazing what a new space, new people, and a whole lot of excitement and vision can bring. I'm finally working on stuttering[odys] - a piece that I've been conceptualizing for many, many moons - thanks to the help of fellow artmakers @ the JAG. With Crispian, we've actually turned the concept/software into two pieces - one that elicits stuttering words, and a second which is a body-triggered music sampler. I really hope we finish in time to set it up for the Braai Klub this Saturday; his sounds are infectious...

Some things I didn't foresee:
Mapped out IA (Information Architecture) drawn across the gallery wall - plans for the upcoming CD-ROM
Children complaining that the entertainment system set-up is not yet running the new Matrix game
Some of my students from Wits impressing fellow artmakers, and asking for guidance in the exhibit space
Egg Salad (or in SA speak, Egg Mayonnaise) sandwiches every day
Photographers, filmmakers and other (not personally invited) guests who read about 24.7 - in various news clippings and on varying web sites - and showed up to participate and document.
Noise. Lots of noise coming from the basement of the JAG
The life that breathes in the oft-thought-to-be-scary center of downtown Johannesburg

Further details

What is 24.7? Based on the principles of the City+Suburban 24 hour residency
programme. The 24.7 programme is presented in the public realm of the Johannesburg
Art Gallery. Art and social commentary produced live. A 'studio' will be set-up
downstairs at the JAG. This programme will be more structured than its predecessor-
24 hours over six days, four hours a day with seven 'chapters' of collaboration
and experimentation.

What is the 24 hour residency programme? Initiated in mid 2002 by Christian
Nerf
at City+Suburban studios. Primarily offering artists an opportunity
to work in the city as well as creating a platform for potential collaborations.
The invited artist has a flexible timetable- 24 hours on site within a week.
The first participant was artist Barend de Wet, subsequently his project (knitted
bikinis) was exhibited, with a video produced at his residency, at the C3 Gallery.
Other artists include Stephen Hobbs and Tracy Hennen. The Braai Klub is an integral
component of the residency and allows for informal social networking.

What is City+Suburban studios? Founded in early 2002 by Kathryn Smith and Christian
Nerf
with nathaniel stern subsequently
joined us. This is a working artist studio in Commissioner street, Johannesburg.
S[..]N recently presented a collaborative work on the Softserve event held at
the Castle in Cape Town. The studio has facilitated previews of documentaries
and video artworks. It is a meeting point for communicators from all disciplines,
connecting socially aware fine artists with their 'commercial' counterparts.

Final download

Documentation of this journey is key. Evidence of this nature is as valuable
as the end produce, if not the actual product. An exhibition of 24.7 evidence
will commence at the JAG on the 30th of August through to the 20th of September.
It's art as usual in Johannesburg.

24.7 is about the Bold & the Beautiful as much as

it is about the Best of the Best.

The overall process can integrate new participants on short notice so contact
thefacilitator@christiannerf.info
with a short proposal. Reviews and previews at www.artthrob.co.za
and daily downloads at www.247residency.blogspot.com.

Friday, May 30, 2003

For the moment, we are merely creating a blog to be used, in future, for the 24.7 residency. This project will be H-O-T. Pull in to the launch on the 21st of June, Johannesburg Art Gallery.
